From my experience, yes and no. When I was a student in China, some 20 years ago, I've seen one type of keyboard that has all Chinese partial symbols on them. The typist was really fast in getting an essay types using the so called "Wu Bi Zi Xing"(The 5-stroke-method). Nowadays, in everyday use, including myself, I type using the regular English keyboard. Windows XP has Chinese input option, if actived, all I need to do is press ctrl+space to switch to Chinese mode and using PinYing method to type Chinese. Yes, like previously explained, you type the sound of the character. Since there are many characters with the same sound, you will pick the one your want from the list by typing the number that respresents it. I don't find it slow, maybe because I've used often...

No, they use the same keyboard, same characters. They type the words phonetically (a system known as "pinyin") and the computer thanslates the alphabetical text into a Chinese character.

This requires that the typist be familiar with the alphabet, which is not a big problem-----in the cities, most Chinese children are taught pinyin before they're taught how to write with Chinese characters----it's a better system for teaching proper pronounciation of words.

Physically the keyboard is the same. An old method used the key and the rest of the character; the newer software Nanji star (http://www.njstar.com/ ) free on the Net simply uses the pinyin on a qwerty keyboard.

No, they don't. Exactly the same. You know, the QWERTY one. People there used to use Wu-Bi software (five-strokes) to type Chinese Characters. It is complicated and people need to have special training to manage this way of typing. But now, except the professional typists, people seldom use this way of typing. They use Pinyin software to type. It is easier (or, I should say, much less difficult) to use. Everyone knows Pinyin as long as they're not illiterate. For example, if you wanna type YOU for the Chinese character ( which is spelt "NI" in pinyin), you just type N and I, and the software list all the characters that are spelt "NI", and choose the one you want by clicking on the number key. And they list the characters by frequency. Still seems kinda complicated, doesn't it?

No.
They have the same keyboard.
But they have special software installed to type the chinese. Usually, if you are using the Chinese version operating system, there are preloaded input softwares.
You can just simply switch the input method to type chinese.
