For some people of certain faiths, yes it is necessary to them. I personally would just respect that this is what they like to do, and nod and agree. Disagreeing with someone on their religious beliefs or rituals can never end well. Respect is the best thing to do in this case.

As the head and protector of his household, it is very necessary for a man to pray. Prayer creates unity in the family and an appreciation for the material blessings his family has acquired.

it depends upon his personal religious beliefs, or to respect the religious beliefs of those around him. If he thinks it is necessary, then it is for HIM, it doesnt mean it is physically necessary but it is more of a moral and ethical question rather than a scientific and physical one.
