All of your dogs energies are going in to milk production. People don't realize how draining it is for the dam to maintain weight and muscle until they see the effects on the dog. I hope you are giving her extra rations and vitamins? Once she is done nursing she should gain back weight naturally. She needs a vet check to make sure all is going well.

is she still feeding the pups? if so then you want to keep a bowl of food filled up..with dry preferably near her so she can eat whenever. Its very important she gets all the nutrition she needs otherwise the puppies will not grow properly. When you start weaning the pups..at about three weeks..you can start giving her four meals adady..then slowly put it back to her normal feeding regime..so by the time the pups are ready to go to new homes..she is eating normally again. She wont put on weight while she is feeding the pups unless she is getting enough food.
I have a friend who breeds shepherds and spaniels..she has been doing this for 25 years..and never had a problem with her dogs..and shepherds are renowned for starving themselves when either pregnant or nursing.

she needs to go be checked by a vet. you can feed her puppy food at least 3 times a day. also she needs to be dewormed, most female dogs after they give birth will get roundworms that have been laying dormant in their bodies. she sh quite possibly could have round worms, which would be causing her to have difficulty putting back on weight. but it's also normal for a lactating ***** to stay low weight, feeding and taking good care of 8 babies is hard work.

Feed her puppy food. It has extra protien for nursing dogs and puppies. Give her an egg with her food when you feed her. It will help her put weight on. We had puppies before and that is what our vet said.
Hope I helped! Have a very Merry Christmas!

Why don't you leave her dog food out all the time so she can eat when she is hungry? Feeding 8 puppies from your own body requires a lot of food. Make sure she has plenty of fresh water as well. You might want to treat her to some good quality canned dog food too.

If shes still nursing her litter she wants fed right up, chicken etc, the more the better!
During nursing and after when your wanting more weight on her ask your vet for some SA-37 to mix with her food. Just dont go over the top. She'll get huge lol

Ordinary dog food is fine for ordinary dogs but nursing females need a very high energy, high nutrient food. Ordinary dog food is high bulk so that the dog feels full but doesn't get too hyper.
Get a food formulated for nursing females and give her 3 or 4 meals a day. You can't expect her stomach to take in all the food she needs in one or two portions.

you aren't feeding her enough or properly. She needs high protein kibble, plus tinned food, plus plenty of scrambled eggs once a day, and cooked oily fish like mackerel, minced chicken, beef heart etc. She should have as much to eat as she wants so feed at least 4 times a day if not 5. What on earth possessed you to breed your b1tch when you seem to have no idea how to feed her during pregnancy or when nursing a litter?!?!?!?
The poor b1tch is using up her own body reserves trying to provide a decent supply of milk for her puppies.

Usually after a dog gives birth they gain weight from the puppies. If your dog is a normal weight (you can't see {and I mean see, not feel} her ribs and backbone), then she should be fine. Wait a few more days, if nothing changes, talk to your vet. He will know what's best.
