My brother was paranoid schizophrenic he was only diagnosed for 31/2 months before he hung himself because he couldn't bare to live with the disease. From what we have read and very little that he told us. Some of the symptoms are hearing voices, sometimes seeing demons, thinking that demons are coming out of places that aren't possible like light sockets and plug ins, thinking that everyone is out to get you such as kill you put you in prison things of that matter. If you or someone else you know has this disease stay on your meds and be totally honest with your doctors there really are there to help you. Another thing don't push family and friends away let them help if they can they are not against you. I hope this has helped some this is all i can think of off the top of my head.

Paranoid schizophrenia
In this type of schizophrenia, the individual has feelings of being persecuted or plotted against. Affected individuals may have grandiose (over-the-top) delusions associated with protecting themselves from the perceived plot.

The key symptoms are delusions and auditory hallucinations. Paranoid schizophrenia usually does not involve the disorganized speech and behavior that is seen in other types of schizophrenia. Patients with paranoid schizophrenia typically are tense, suspicious, guarded, and reserved.

"Paranoid" is only one of the many problems a person suffering with this mental disease(schizophrenia) has to deal with. If someone called you this as a joke, well, whatever. You can certainly be paranoid w/o having a mental disease. Schizophrenia can be mild where one is just a bit dillusional, but can certainly worsen over time to the point of being locked up. There are treatments, but no cure (like aids, cancer, cold virus..)
