A draft would be pretty disasterous, considering less than 50% of the population support the war, and with something as drastic as that then you'd lose some of those who support the war. People would perhaps think it's ok for soldiers to go to war, but as soon as it's their sons (and presumably nowadays daughters) going to war it changes the whole thing. There would be massive protests, civil disobedience and unrest. Whether the government would say 'put up and shut up' or cave in is another matter.

The issue of the draft being reinstated was brought up by a Democrat Congressman. As for the the increase in troops in Iraq, that can be accomplished by augmenting Army and Marines with the other branches of the military (Navy and Air Force). It will leave less units behind in the shore basses, therefore local economies near these bases do get hurt temporarily, but the increase in troops if deemed necessary would be accomplished. All the military are meeting their recruiting goals this past couple of reporting periods. I know that the Navy has been posting augmentation call ups for Iraq, Afghanistan. There have been a few people from my command that have volunteered to go. Yes it will be different to train Navy personnel for ground fighting, but it can be done. The Army is currently heading the objective of training Navy persons in Basic ground combat training. The Navy has been an active participant in sending augmentees to Iraq and Afghanistan. The assumption that just the Army is in Iraq and Afghanistan is simply untrue. All branches has been sending people to those areas.

I don't think we'll get a draft just yet, but I believe it's coming. "THEY" have been saying for months that we're already spread too thin across the globe & not enough are volunteering. I have an Army National Guardsman son & both my twin sons have joined the Marines. I think within the next 2 yrs. they'll draft my only son who hasn't enlisted & thankfully, my last son is too young. My hubby is a 10 yr. Dessert Storm vet & he said he'd gladly serve again-but that won't happen if I've got anything to say about it!

The draft is not needed. There are more than enough volunteers and re-enlistments. The problem is that the Army has been downsized by Congress after the collapse of the USSR, and it is illegal to enlist more volunteers that the law allows.
Would I go?
Yes I would.
Why?
Because

There will never be a draft, because then the sons of congressmen will be sent overseas! And whoever said women can't be in combat is wrong, I'm a woman in the military, and I'm going to Iraq in April. The base I'm going to is going to be getting attacked all day and night long.

There won't be a draft, that is certain. We did our job in Iraq- we determined that there were no weapons of mass destruction, we destroyed tons of conventional weapons Saddam had, and we caught him and removed his government from power. In that respect we accomplished all we intended. It is unfortunate that there doesn't appear to be a single strong enough movement to avert civil war in Iraq. But what can we do now? The US Army was made to fight and kill people, not serve as peace makers or policemen. Either kill the bad guys or get out.

no draft, won't go because i am a woman and i am not allowed in combat...if i am going to join or be drafted into the military i would want to be on the front lines...ranger or special forces...if you're going to join then be all you can be...i think the public wants it over with and i think our biggest mistake was not going in with a lot more shock and awe at the beginning. what we needed is less ground troops and a lot more bombing and clearing out of the rats nests.

No, I don't think it will bring a draft. A draft would be political suicide for any and all people voting for it. This war is unpopular enough.
They don't need to draft me; they can just recall me from the Air Force retired list. I would go if called; that's the deal I made.
I want America to get out of a war we had no business being in.

There will not be a draft. If there was one and I was drafted, or my husband or daughter were drafted, we would serve proudly. That is our duty, and a small price to pay to live in the best country in the world.
