If she is old and not keeping weight on despite good feeding (which is not unusual in geriatric dogs) you need to be realistic about her condition. Aside from weight, how else does she act? Is she alert and active, or does she just lie around? Does she still want to play?

When faced with having to put my dog to sleep, my vet told me to keep in mind three things that she loved to do all her life. When she could not longer do them, then it was time.

Take the dog to another vet for a second opinion, but be honest with yourself. If your dog can't eat and her health is failing, keeping her alive may not be the kindest option for her.

So what did your vet say???????? You certainly aren't one of those morons that comes on here for advice ARE YOU???????......Well, you cant be mad at us if you forgot to add details. You never mentioned your vet wanted the dog put down. That is a totally different subject. I am sorry your dog is not doing well. Vets don't advise dogs be put down unless they feel the dog is suffering. Unfortunately it is you that is not ready. Sometimes the best way we can show love is by doing what is best for them not ourselves. It is very very hard. I know I recently had to do it myself. You have a sense of guilt that really never goes away. This time of year doesn't make it much easier. Search your heart only you can decide. Sorry!!!!!

Has the vet recommended anything for her? Is she on geriatric dog food? If so, why not add a little low-fat cottage cheese or no-fat, no-sugar yogurt - good for digestion. You could also boil a little rice and hamburger for her and add some to her dog food. You want her basic food to be dog food, but you can add a few safe treats for her as long as she's not allergic to anything, just not too much because you don't want her to get the runs.

you need to take her to the vet. They can suggest a special diet to help her out. In the mean time, make sure she is still drinking lots of water. But you really do need to see a vet.

well why did the vet say she needed to be put to sleep. a vet isn't just going to look at your dog if you're there for help and say naw put her to sleep. did you run bloodwork, take x-rays??? what is going on, there's something you're not telling us.

If she has lost alot of weight she may have a tape worm. Tape worms eliminate an animals hunger. They are easily removed with medication from your Vet.

if you have already taken her to the vet, and they have done all they can......

vets do sometimes supply a pet sustagen of types, its expensive....but worth it......ask your vet about it....

Otherwise the best things are micemeat and rice with mixed vegetables and gravy thrown in, ensure she is drinking plenty of water, and always has dry food handy.....otherwise just keep her dry, warm/cool - depending on the season, and comfortable......im sorry to say but this is all you can do......Good luck with it, i wish you the best.
