"Gynecology" is a word derived from the Greek, as quite a few medical terms are: Hippocrates is the Greek father of medicine. "Gyne" and words derived from it relate to women in Greek, and the "logy" means study. (Thus psycholgy is the study of the mind, "psyche" being Greek for mind.) A gynecologist is a medical specialist in the reproductive and sexual parts of women, childbirth being an important part of it. Often they are called obstetrician-gynecologists.
