Now this really depends on how physically big you want your camera to be? And how much you wanna spend?

If you want a compact camera, most come with an optical zoom no larger than x3. Optical zoom is what you are looking for, as digital zoom pixelates your picture, and you can do the same on a computer afterwards! So, I guess you have to rule out compact cameras if a strong zoom is what you are looking for. Although, for all-round goodness, there are some quality compacts on the market. Olympus Mju725SW is very cool - 7.1Mp, x3 optical zoom, but best of all it's waterproof to 5m, and shockproof to a drop of 1.5m - hardy, and produces great snaps. There are loads to choose from in this marketplace, and some people will recommend the makes they like, but they are all pretty much the same at each price band.
Next step up is the prosuma range of products. These are like SLR cameras, in that they have substantial zoom capabilities, and they look almost like an SLR, but they don't have interchangable lenses. Panasonic Lumix range is the market leader, with a Leica lens and there is one knocking around for about £250 - this is where your money is best spent as far as I am concerned.
Step up again, nd you are in SLR territory, and needless to say, you need to be thinking about spending a lot of cash here. The Canon EOS range is the market leader here, and they have just brought a new model out which is pretty damn amazing! However, when you buy one of these, you will need to then additionally purcase a zoom lens, which will set you back another couple of hundred notes. Physically much bigger, with plenty more to schlap around in your camera bag which can be annoying on the long journeys.

Try to avoid anything that uses Compact Flash cards as storage, as they are on the way out. More are moving over to SD, and you can get 2Gb cards quite cheap at amazon, dabs, etc.

Get an "all in one" since SLR interchangeable will cost more and
you would need an assistant to carry the 400mm. lens. My choice
would be a Panasonic with a Leica 12x optically zooming lens.
It has an aperture of f2.8 at 36mm and f3.4 at 432mm equivalent.
Sony have an equivalent with a Zeiss lens but closes to f3.7 at
full zoom and battery life is a little short. You can recharge but
when travelling it can be a nuisance. Also I have a personal
preference for the Leica lens. Both, naturally, have ED aspherical
lenses which are great. Take a look at both, and make your own
choice. Nikon, Canon and others have similar specs but my choice
goes with the above mentioned.

Thats an easy one - Canon EOS 1 DS MKII and a Canon EF600 L IS USM, thats a 600mm image stabilised lens on a 16.7 Megapixel digital SLR. Should come in around ten grand if you buy them together.
