If you want to pant less, you need to do more exercise and get fit. Exercise will make you pant, though. You breathe hard during exercise because your body needs more oxygen.

Hiking on hills is vigorous physical exercise which much increases the body's need for oxygen. So, to get the air the muscles need for energy, you have to increase the volume and rate of breathing to meet demand. Conditioning and aerobic exercises will enable you to better meet your physical needs up to a point, but even young well conditioned athletes pant when they over exert themselves. Happy hiking. Try not to overdo!

do thier tongue's hang out of the corner of the mouth aswell..

They are either over-weight and yes.. any exercise will stop this over time.. perhaps walking up hills might do it!!!

Or if the tongue thing happens at the same time try getting them a bowl of water and a basket to have a rest in

When you induldge in an activity that is strenuous compared to your normal one, you tend to spend more energy, and your heart beats faster. This probably requires the lungs to pump more of oxygen to the heart. As there is a limit to the quantity of air your lungs get by normal breathing of outside air, you tend to open your mouth to supplement the drawal of more air, by panting.
Panting can occur even when one is doing vigorous exercises like quick walking, running, lifting heavy weights, etc.
You can try deep breathing exercises so that your normal breathing process itself allows more intake of air.

Going pant-less is illegal in most states. The notable exception, of course, is Arkansas, where it's known as "goin' Clinton".
