Just for friendship? Just comment on something she is doing or the color or style of her clothes. A compliment is always well taken by a woman.

Most women over 40 have had enough life experience that if you use the same approach as you do with the less experienced it won't work. We've 'been there, done that' and don't have a tendency to bat our lashes in wide-eyed wonder and your latest tales of conquest. We appreciate you for who you are not what you've done or the material things you've gathered in this life. She'll be impressed with the guts it took to start a conversation and the smile you have when you start it. Be yourself and don't trying playing games or handing her a line. She'll not only see right through it but but it will turn her off completely. Start the conversation with a simple hello and an observation about something trivial yet interesting (the latest headline in the news, the weather, the train is unusually crowded/empty, etc.). Make your sentences open ended and, if warranted, show a genuine interest in what she has to say. Good luck and I hope you make a friend!

How could possibly know how old a woman on the train is? You could miles off or right on the mark do you really want to take the chance?
Just say hello. Dont push it. Dont rush it. Just always say hello--how are you doing. Chat and then after a couple of hellos ask for drinks. Then see were it leads. But during the hello parts of the conversations ask questions a listen. You will find things out like if she has a man or if she is really 45 or just hard living 25.

she's an older woman, been there done that, usually they aren't in the mood for b.s. as they have seen enough.
Just be honest and up front. You could either do:
a.) say "hey we see each other everyday on the train and I've been meaning to ask you out for a drink to get to know you are. If that's something you would be into doing. "
b.) start talking to her on the train get to know her and see if SHE decides to ask YOU out.

get a seat next to her on the train and just start up a conversation. if she reads while she is on the train, ask her about the book she is reading. don't be to forward as you might scare her. just start a nice easy conversation.
good luck
