Because of legal-ness, you cannot get @gmail.com emails anymore.
The only way to get one would be to either buy one off someone of have someone nice give you theres.
Otherwise you're stuck with @googlemail.com

I'm not sure if the above suggestions will work:I have a gmail account and sent an invite from it but my friend who received the invite got offered a googlemail account....

You ask you friend to login to his gmail account and send you the invite from that account.
It is seen in bottom left corner of his inbox
If not, ask me, i would be able to provide you one.

Sounds like your in the UK. It's because of a trademark dispute that 'gmail' is googlemail in UK.

All these will not work.
What you will have to do is that ask your friend who is not in UK to create an account for you and then send you the password so that you can start using it.
