Both are correct, depending on the usage.
"Fish" is the plurral of any type of fish, it's more general. "The fish in my fishtank" - "I like all sorts of fish for dinner", or when refering to ONE type of fish: "all the fish in the school of herring were moving quickly" or "the molly fish in my tank are red".

"Fishes" is used when refering to several types of fish. "There are hundreds of types of fishes in the ocean", "The fishes of Lake Huron are diverse", or "Tuna, Sharks, and Salmon are all big fishes".

'Fish' is both singular and also plural for more than one fish of the same type, but if you have more than one type of fish (i.e. 1 goldfish, 2 catfish and 1 rasbora) then it's referred to as 'fishes'. Hope this helps.

I believe fishes is referring to different species of fish, not the plural of a single species of fish.

Oh, tricky! Since fishes is a word but it is a verb - he fishes, she fishes, not a plural of fish. You caught the author and editor in a booboo. Good going!
