it depends. If the person who said it has children who believe in Santa, you would have had to told those children that there is no Santa.
I know a guy whose, ex-wife did just that, without even consulting him 1st. And that was after she had abandoned them for 3 years and then just showed back up out of the blue!
Personally, I never set my kids up for that fall. They were told the original story of Christmas and St. Nick, ever since they were toddlers. They always knew Mommy and Daddy stuffed their stockings for the fun of it.
if there are no kids involved, it would probably be an emotional response to someone's plans or arrangements being ruined/changed, or maybe a gift exchage idea gone wrong, or something.
personally, if someone said that to me, I would ask that person directly why they feel that way and what I could do to fix it.

there are ways a person can ruin Christmas without even intending to do so. one can receive a letter saying a certain person is out of money wanting some which is not available. or a very special person might not even be sending a Christmas card.

It seems like when my Grandma died 10 years ago, Christmas was ruined.
My Grandma made Christmas so much fun and its hard every year to be happy around this time. But life goes on.
My Grandma would put her tree up right before Thanksgiving and do all her shopping early. We were always showered with presents.
We would always go driving around to look at lights.
I started that tradition with mykids this year.
If I had to choose something that ruined Christmas it would be
my Grandmas death.

I personally like Christmas too much to ruin it for myself or others. But I have had it ruined for me many times. My mother evicted me on Christmas morning and threatened me with the police if she ever saw me again. My father has always been very anti-social and anti-Christmas and his foul mood and constant complaining puts a damper on everyone else's spirits no matter how much they ignore it.

What would ruin Christmas for me would simply be to lose a loved one.
Having a relative die in a car crash Christmas Eve, or to wake up Christmas morning to find one of my beloved snakes dead - that would completely, utterly destroy Christmas.
Other than that, it is quite hard to ruin my fun.

Beat me up perhaps, or hurt my kids. Or maybe have a retinal detachment, that almost happened to me last week. So glad my Christmas wasn't ruined by a stay in hospital!

Show up drunk and drugged up at my Brother's house Christmas day. His wife's sister did that once, slag that she is.
It didn't ruin our day, several of us kept up her bum until she became completely ar*sed and left. We laughed about it and keep revelling
If I did it though, it would be waaay out of character and would ruin it for my brother.

A few years ago, 2003 I think we had a radio station tell kids to listen to the radio at a certain time, they promoted it for a couple of days. Then they said Santa wasn't real and their presents buy the gifts. There was such fury that it made the news and I think the djs were suspended.
I haven't listened to that station since. Which stinks there are only a few classic rock stations out there.
