Its only in recent years that we have been seeing images of what happens when someone gets wounded of killed in war.

In very recent years there has been a lot of censorship of those images again.

Patriotism is a very powerful means of getting people to do really stupid things when our elected leaders have failed at the negotiation table.

Would you do a job when there is a chance you might get maimed or killed?

Ignorance is bliss. Many people do not realize the true nature of war. There is no true honorable war. Or better yet, "The War for Freedom". The media and our government is brainwashing us to believe that Diplomacy does not work and that our military strength is the answer. In addition to why I said ignorance is bliss, many of those who are "gung ho" for the war effort actually buy what they are being told as to why we are fighting in the first place. Afghanistan (which was logistically planned prior to 9/11) was obviously the country linked to 9/11 by harboring Bin Laden and the Taliban its government. The reason for war with this country was understandable. Crossing into Iraq however clearly shows what the administrations true mission objective was. Iraq for 7 years had weapons inspectors who said they couldn't find any breaches on international law, yet Bush fabricated his reason and attacked AGAINST the decision of the UN. But most of us dont care to remember the facts and rather compare our suffering troops to those of WWII heroes fighting a war to protect democracy from the spreading fascism. Although now its seems as though we are spreading the fascism through our foreign policy.

I think you are missing the point. I support the TROOPS. as far as the war, i have mixed feelings, but those feelings do not in any way change my support for the men and women serving in Iraq, Afganistan, and all around the world. I find it very disrespectful to those troops when people try to make a political point at the expense of the troops. With out the sacrifice made by millions of young americans, we would not have the freedoms that we have today. the worst thing people can say is that the war in iraq is "a waste of time" or it is "an illegal war/illegal occupation" that is doing so much damage to the moral of the troops. we can encourage and support the military even if we don't agree with the politics.

Watching war on TV isn't a recent phenomenon. I grew up watching the Vietnam War on the news every night. Iraq is not about our freedom today or what our forefathers did hundreds of years ago. This is a bullsh*t war that Bush got us involved in to score points with his old man and get Saddam. Bush and his "If you're not with me, you're not with the troops" act has worn thin as we watch more and more soldiers die while Bush vacations in Texas or stumbles around for a plan.

Good question ,,,you might ask the president that question and from what I see it is the same soliders over and over again fighting this war without enough man power,,,,and they just layed off 40 thousand military in vagas,,,why did they do that when we need more men and the only fair way is the draft and it should be everybody,,,,,If bush had two sons over there would it have caused a different approach>>>>as nothing is personal till it hits home,,,,

who says those who are 'gung ho' as you call it are only watching it from the safety of their homes....seems to me those in the military are pretty involved.....one thing you can't seem to comprehend is that the military sees this 'war' as a job, they were assigned to complete the mission and any good soldier will tell you they WILL complete it. you're just one of those ppl who oppose the war and would rather look at all the negative and whine, piss and moan rather than see the bigger picture and the reality that as difficult as this mission is it will ultimately benefit the world.

Because they're convinced that they're showing their support for this war by putting a "Support the Troops" sticker on the back of their gas-guzzling SUVs and shopping at Wal Mart.
It's pathetic.

I suppose for the same reason that some people are "gung ho" about scuba diving, thereby putting scuba gear on their avatar, but never actually getting their butts in the water.
