My kids are 3, 8, 9 and 10 they all carry a cell phone, ok I know 3 is too young, keep reading, certain cell phones are made just for kids, They are not regular ones but they do cost more, the have a tracking device in them so, as long as my kids have there phone with them and if they ever get lost I can call the police and they can find them just off there phone, Anyone can call them although, it only has 4 numbers on it, So, they can only call the 4 people we have programed in. So, Safety is number 1. Then, it is also a good way for you two to be able to get ahold of each other if she is with friends. Then my last one would be because it can teach her responsibility, My kids do certain chores for there phone, so, that teaches them responsibility. Now, on the other side of that I can give you reasons they shouldnt have one but, when and if you do get her one make sure she is not abusing it and running up min. I have a plan where all incoming calls are free that way there friends can call them all they want and it doesnt leave me a huge bill at the end of the month. Plus with this kind of phone they cant just call anyone and everyone..

The number one reason cited by kids for "needing" a cell phone is safety. "Gee, Mom if I had a cell phone, I could get in touch with you in an emergency". The best response is to ask how often just such an emergency has occurred and to point out that a 12, almost 13 year old should not be in places where there is a high chance of getting into an emergency. Also, consider the expense. At the very least, you will be paying a bit over $10 a month (that's as an extension to your own cell phone) just for the "comfort" that your daughter can communicate with you in a hurry. Most schools do not allow cell phones to be used during the day and most kids use any communication device as much as possible. There is no such thing as only in an emergency, or for that matter, only for so many minutes a month. When a child, any age, can pay for the service, they are pld enough to get a cell or any other kind of phone. Cell phones are one of the current tendy "needs". I cannot think of even one good reason for a child to have a cell phone.

No, i think that is WAY too young for a cell phone.

A good reason to give a kid a cell phone is when they start driving i case god forbid, something happens.

There is NO good reason to give a 12 year old a phone unless you want to shut the kid up.

You tell your daughter that when she starts driving, and gets a job of her own, you will buy her a cell phone as a reward for her responsibility, not because she wants one.
A cell phone is one of those things you DONT spoil a child with too early on.

Because all kids have cell phones these days!

OH! You wanted a GOOD reason?

The only thing I can come up with is, indeed, safety. Giving her the ability to contact you in case of emergency and vice versa.

There are some phones out there now that are designed for 'tweens'. They only have a few buttons and your child can only dial a few numbers on them. You might check into one of those. Otherwise, you'll never speak to her again. It'll be text, text, text, all day long... :-)

Here's a parenting article about this very thing:

If she ever need to dial 911? Catch up with her friends? Call for help if she ever got lost? Cell phones are relatively inexpensive these days when you sign up a new plan. They are acutally phones that are just designed for kids that you may want to check out. You can find many free phones with cash back after rebate from this site: http://www.selectivemobile.com/?aid=deals

Most of us didn't have a cell phone at that age and got along fine without them so I don't understand why these kids need phones at such a young age.

A cell-phone is not a toy, but it is seen as a neccessary "accessory" for our youth of today, its basicaly the ol "jump on the band-wagon" syndrome, everyone has one one so I need one too. A good parent would ignore-it and only get their child a cell phone when they really need one. ex. High School and beyond.

if kids ask for a cell phone then there are only 2 reasons for it,
1. show of....i mean they want to show there friends that they r very rich.and they want to talk with someone, whom u don't want them to talk to.

2. or they want it for thier safety...and normally kids don't even know that they r not safe...
this means that she wants it for some other purpose...
i'm 14. and till now my mother is not giving me a personal cell...
and i don't have any objection coz i know she's rite.
so my opinion is that don't provide her any cell phone unless she's 18.

my daughter is almost 9 and she has one of those "migo" phones, it only dial 4 preset (by me) numbers, the only down fall is that any numbers ring in, so unless they call the number by accident, no one has the number. I took great care to hide the number and did not give it to anyone except the ones in the phone. She has one because her father (who gets her every other weekend) doesnt have a home phone anymore.
