I have highlighted the address and clicked the back space bar, and have tried to delete it from the address list, but the unwanted address keeps reappearing.

I think all you can do is to delete all of them.
Go to the top of the page and click:
Tools
Internet Explorer
"General" tab
History
...and then "clear history"

The bad part: all recently viewed sites will be gone.
The good part: the site you WANT gone, WILL be gone

Cleaning your Internet history won't clean your address bar. To accomplish this do as follows:
1. Click on Tools from the top of this window
2. Select Internet Options
3. From the new pop up window, select the General tab
4.Select delete cookies, click yes
5. Select delete files, then click "delete all off line content" option
6. Last Clear History

The only draw back to this process is that you will lose all addresses from your address bar. Deleting a single address from the address list requires playing with the registry, which is something I don't recommend.

You have a couple of different options:

#1
Grab this free program

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware! :)

#2:

1. Click on Start, then Run.
2. Type regedit in the box provided.
3. In Regedit navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Typed URLs
4. Then just delete all of the keys that list the URL's you no longer want to see.

Goto Tools>Internet option> Click Clear History tab.

Try this browser http://www.browzar.com/, it will never save your history in address bar or files in temp folder. Seriously for secure and private browsing.
