I agree that it wasn't very polite. I think that people grow up reacting different ways to presents and things - if someone gave me a present that I already have (which has happened to me several times) I would never ever look disappointed and say I already have it, I would look excited and say thank you very much, even if the present was no use to me, that's just the way I've been brought up.
But I know a family who, when they open presents, have no problem saying "ergh, I don't like it, take it back etc." Needless to say, I'm not friends with this person any more...

she more than likely appreciated the present but slipped up by saying she already had one the same,,dont worry over it,,it was thoughtless but i doubt in a bad way,,some people forget to engage their brains before they put their mouth into action,,i had a similar incident where i took my young son for a haircut,(he hates the hairdressers)with the promise of a small gift if he had the haircut,,he did and on his birthday in december he got the same gift from his gran,,he was disappointed but was told not to say anything as she would be upset,,he hasnt said a word and all is well so i can imagine your feelings on this one.take it in fun and next time you consider buying her a gift keep it light and funny by mockingly asking to have a snoop around her room so as not to repeat the mistake again,,she will no doubt get the message and the joke,,you are friends and that matters much more!

At least she didn't say "You're joking right"
My brother in law got his fiance a painting that was a little abstract.
Sorta Salvador Dhali without all the nudity oddness.
It was a man sitting at a piano. My (now sister inlaw) plays piano and so my brother thought she would love it.
She said it scared her.
He paid some money for it too.

Sounds like shes an ungrateful cow. Don`t buy her any thing again, most people would say thank you and keep to them selves that they all ready have it. my friend went to alot of trouble finding me an xmas present - but i already had one so i didn`t let on, i screamed and made a big fuss off her and the trouble she went to. its the thought that counts.

i would thank you for it and not say that i had already got it because its better to have to many of the same thing that not at all because if one got broken i would have the new one to fall back on. and its the thought that counts when you recieve a pressi off anyone.
grrrrrr some people are so ungrateful.

She sounds like a very insensitive "friend"!
I would insist that it goes back to the place you got it from, and that she pick something else out. After that, I'd just give her gift cards, if you even want to exchange gifts, at all!Good luck!

It is hard to tell some1 u already have the gift. This happened to me once and you dont want to seem ungrateful they arnt! but they if she is a close friend you should ask if u can exchange it for another gift. otherwise its just a waste of money she will understand

even if i had it, i would have been very excited because of the fact that you cared enough about me to go out and get me something. if i was in the situation where she told you she already had it and you said you could take it back, i would have let you because that would have been a waste of your moeny, you know? oh and i would have gieven you a hug, of course.

i no how this feels but she was just being honesty and i think that is what a true friend is all about. itz the thought that counts so dont let it hang over your head. if she was a good friend she would use it or at least use it a spare

Its the thought that counts, plus depending upon what it is once she has used one she can then use the other or possibly share with her sister if she has one etc etc
Me personally i say thank yo, then later on ask my brother if he would like one.
