Old vinyl has been lifted and will be replaced with new vinyl. I'd like to remove the old adhesive which was placed directly onto timber flooring about 30 years ago

There are two options if you have tried to remove it using water as a solvent then it is most likely an alkaloid base adhesive and you will need to use turpentine or mineral spirits to remove it. No matter weather it is water based or (oil) alkaloid based it will take a considerable amount of elbow grease to remove it. Try the water first though an see if it works for you.

There is no "easy" way so forget it. One person I know just used a sander with many sanding discs. I personally scraped and gouged, swore and scraped again, then sanded. I had to use some bleach in the end but I finally got it.
