Tomorrow is the last day before the plant shuts down and i booked a half day inkeeping with the normal half day before shut down, so i could take the whole day off. I was told that it would be fine when i booked it but now it seems that this has changed although i've not been told i only overheard it. Do you think that i should go in? Particularly as i would then have to travel halfway up the country in the middle of horrendous rush hour on Friday afternoon.

No, you don't have to go in, unless your boss asks you. You gave them notice ahead of time, they said o.k. and noone has asked you to come in, you just overheard it. Unless someone comes up to you and tells you that you need to go in, I wouldn't worry about it.

If you've not been officially told, how would you know? Just continue as you've been initially advised. The other option is to check with them and then you know for definite.

It's a bit of a daft idea booking half of the last day though as most companies do tend to shut down around lunchtime-ish.

No you technically don't have to go in. If it was not announced at your meeting or a note left in your file then No. If you get questioned and any employees say that it was mentioned, then you say that you did not hear if directly spoken to you in a group, if it was in a group situation, then double check tonight or in the morning what is the correct information. You can't get away with it if it was mentioned in a group situation and there was a spokesperson, but you need to verify if this information is correct if the person did not say that this information has come directly from management. It would have to come from a team leader of your section.

If you haven't been told it's not ok then you should assume that it is until told otherwise! Have a nice Christmas and don't feel guilty. They'll get over it.

I think that you should just stick your fingers in your ears, close you eyes, and go "la-la-la-la" until home time

Whatever you do, DON'T SPEAK TO YOUR BOSS

Edit
Woo Yay for kicking off with your boss

If you were told that it was fine when you booked it and have not been officially told that anything has chnged, then I would say no, you do not have to go in.

You probably don't need to go in, but check with your HR department to be sure.
