Robert E. Lee, commander of the Confederate army, surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse on 9 April 1865. While the Civil War did not directly abolish slavery and other southern traditions/customs, it did serve as a catalyst for those things and so changed the fabric of America.

The Union won (Northern states). The affect it had on the US was long lasting. First of all, it reunited the country even if it took force. It brought an end to the practice of slavery. It also had the side effect of gaining more states rights, which was the primary cause of the war to start with. It's sad, but we had to go to war in order to force a compromise that could have been reached without bloodshed. The Union won in that it kept the US united, but the South won it's ability to maintain a great deal of their state rights.
Just an interesting note, both Presidents of the Civil War were born in Kentucky about 100 miles apart and Kentucky was a neutral state until just before it was invaded by the Union.

Which one?
In 1776 the British colonies revolted against the Crown and managed to successfully defeat a British army giving. The former colonies formed the United Sates of America.
In 1861 11 states of the United States succeeded from the United States over a dispute against the States rights to legalize the institution of slavery and the Federal governments right too abolish slavery. A very bloody civil war rage across the United States until 1865 when the Army of Northern Virginia was defeated and surrendered. The southern states were readmitted into the Union of the United States of America, and the Federal government was established the primeness over state government.
Prior to the civil war of 1861 the individual states exercised a greater involvement in the everyday individuals life than the federal government. In fact the regiments of troops that served on both side were troops raised, equipped and trained by the states on loan to the federal/confederate government(s). During the U.S. civil war the federal government introduced income tax, civil service, military command of the army over state militias, and slavery was abolished.

The Union North won the American Civil War. It affects America today in many ways, namely, it gave far too much power to the Federal Government...a curse we live with today. The up side is that it was a war to set other men free. Some 2 million black slaves were freed by the un- Godly carnage that took place.and about 180,000 blacks fought for the Union (about 35,000 fought for the South) A President was impeached (Andrew Johnson...the only Democrat in the Senate who stayed loyal to the Union, incidentally) for not giving in to the Radical Republican measures that were designed to punish the South for slavery. Sadly, he failed. The result of his failure was military occupation of the South and a huge amount of Federal Government interference in local affairs. The up side to this though was the fact that South Carolina had a black state supreme court judge by 1870. Eventually, the Democrats took the South back over and immediately started to institute "Jim Crow" laws and "Grandfather clauses" and "Literacy Tests" that prevented the freed blacks from voting, because they voted 90% Republican. Black America started to become a Democrat voting block only as recently as the 1930's. The biggest problem affecting Americans about the Civil War is many Americans profound ignorance of it.

They are wrong slavary was the main reason the southern states seceded from the union. And they clearly lost just ask Jefferson Davis.

Of course there was a victor in the war. Lincoln designated an enemy in the Confederacy and went to war to keep the cotton fields open. Slaves were a third or fourth thought in the grand scheme of things. It was almost purely economics the reasons behind the Civil War. Had the South won, Britain would have a new ally and possibly strike again at the North states.
Don't kid yourself that it was simply Americans killing Americans. As far as they were concerned there were two separate countries and ideologies fighting one another. Almost twice as many Union soldiers were killed as Confederate during the war, Lincoln was damn serious about making sure his cotton fields stayed secure.

The causes of the war, the reasons for its outcome, and even the name of the war itself are subjects of lingering controversy even today. The main results of the war were the restoration and strengthening of the Union, and the end of slavery in the United States.
