America was a colony (of France, Spain, Britain and Others) when slavery started( in the Americas). The USA portion was the last 3rd of this sad history. The USA did not start slavery but it lost hundreds of thousands making sure it ended. No black person living in the USA ever met a slave of the US. The division of the CSA from the USA was absolution in law for the responsibilty of slavery by the US. If You expected the USA to PAY reparations then the USA could ask for repayment of the cost of the civil war and reparations for the desendants of Northern soldiers. PAYMENT has been made in full.

edit: the average slave ship contained 30-40 white men. there is no way 30 white guys jumped off a boat on the coast of Africa went 200 miles inland and captured Black hunters and warriors by the hundreds of thousands and dragged them back to the boat without major help!!!

Africans may have helped the Europeans obtain slaves but in Africa, being a slave was not a derogatory thing. It was a respectful part of society. This horrible treatment of slaves in America was unimaginable to the African.

And to all of you who think we, African-descendants, should go back to Africa, we will, when everybody of European descent goes back to the teeny tiny space of Europe. Oh, now that's a thought!! Everybody go back to where they are descendants from and leave little ole America to the last few Native Americans!

It's crazy that you fail to realize all of Europe's involvement with the slave trade. Think of all the people who have died because Europe needed some people to cultivate the massive lands of America. Who was paying money and goods to those Africans for the slaves? Not Africans.

Slavery is a very ugly thing and no one with half a mind can deny that. Families were broken up and sold like cattle; men, women, and children were beaten, and many women and girls were also used as sex slaves and unwilling concubines. It was atrocious, horrible, and a complete travesty. It is one of the things that most makes me ashamed to be half-white.

On the other hand, my other half is Native American, Shawnee and Catawba. Has anybody ever heard of making reparations to us? It's unheard of. Our people were here first, and we weren't merely sold like cattle-- we were slaughtered like them.

And on my white half, we were all Yankees. Fully half of the male members of my family died in the fight to free the slaves. Did anyone ever offer these brave Freedom Fighters' descendants any reparations? Isn't that worth a cut?

I love blacks, like I love all people. But basically, it's not whites in general that did horrible things to the black people. It was the wealthy, just like it is today, and like it always will be. So we can all wait in line for justice equally, regardless of race, gender, creed, or sexual orientation. We're all victims, we all feel the same Pain and Oppression, and we always will.

Face it. Today, we're all slaves. The wealthy and our chief politicians just pay us in fake Monopoly Money to make us feel better, to somehow legitimize this slavery. But aren't we all owned by our debts, aren't nearly all of our houses owned by the bank or someone else, and aren't we treated like slaves by our respective employers? Our bodies are tested for everything under the sun before we can get a job, our medical records and family histories and credit histories are scrutinized, and our bodily fluids can be taken and analyzed at any time for no reason, and we can lose those jobs because of false readings or improper handling, with no way to fight it, even if we are completely in the right and totally innocent. Face it-- we're all still slaves, unless we're very wealthy.

We've come a long way from having our teeth and feet checked by plantation owners, haven't we? This is what purports to be Freedom two-hundred-and-thirty years later...

Hope for justice in the next life. Nothing has ever changed all that much here. Mere pieces of steel chains were much easier to cut through than the type of Slavery we have today.

Merry Christmas.

This is a well hidden fact... The slaves were sold BY the wealthier and more powerful blacks in Africa to the white man to take as slaves. So initially the blacks were to blame just as much as the whites. People think that whites went over there and caught rounded up and stole people as slaves,,That`s just not how it was. They were already rounded up and in cages and sold to the white men in a organized slave sale for a BIG profit by their own people.......Besides that why should WE have to pay now. We had nothing to do with it that was generations ago, Our generation should not have to carry the burden of this guilt.

Kit kat i think you are right,

other blacks kidnaped them !

we bought stollen people !!! du diligence was not a rule at that time obviously and information about people claiming others back were not available !!

legally : after 1 year and 1 day, anything that was found belongs to the one who founds it if nobody claims it, so now, after 200 years, they are ours !!! they belong to the great american european family !!

PS i just came back from 2 years in Congo and it is a fact that african black have less mercy for them than we have for them !!! and this is not a nuance but a very hard fact that whoever experiences living in developped countries and african countries will support.

the people who sold the Africans were chiefs who made that decision independently and benefitted independently so since they are dead you cannot sue them. more over the chiefs due to ignorance sold human beings for simple things like mirrors etc. However for America it benefitted immensely from the slaves Americans are the one's who profited and still profited look at sports for example music the influence of ancestors of slaves so pay your due please. And please the africans who were kidnapped were the healthy young ones old and sickly people were left behind in some countries the productive old or sick who remained had their hands cut off but some how we Africans survive and continue to survive despite the fact that the americans support greedy dictators who keep the wealth of themselves or support rebels who ensure their is insurgency do u think IMF and World Bank policies really benefit African no they benefit Americans. If Americans could jus leave us be we would be better off but you cant they still want to enslave indirectly. Stop being ignorant the internet is there research and become knowlegeable!

The descendants of slaves now living in the US have a much higher average standard of living than the descendants of those who were left behind in Africa, which is now riven with civil war, famine and disease.

Perhaps certain people should stop and think for a moment about exactly who should be paying who...?

Slavery has been over for a long time now... I don't recall a mass exodus of ex-slaves or the descendants of slaves all heading back to Africa.

True, but like all law suits, they only go after the people with money. I for one would gladly pay reparations, but only if those accepting a check return to Africa.

Exactly what would you like the Africans to pay with, half of them don't have a pot to pi ss in.

KitKAt...get your facts straight out of 53 African countries only 3 areOPEC members Algeria, Nigeria and Libya (which is questionable, as they assimilate more with the Mideast)

Uh, lets look at the history books here, we were not the only country doing this, besides history is history, you cannot change what our ancestors did and we should not be accountable for their actions, if any reperations should of been made in 1800's
