I'm 31 years old and have never really paid attention to Rap music. English is not my first language so I barely understand the lyrics. I actually don't care to much about Rap. However, I always say I listen to any kind of music. And I do, from Classical, Jazz, to Oldies, Heavy metal, Progressive rock, pop, latin, etc.
I recently spent some time with a youger girl who happens to listen to Rap. Particularily, to "Gangster rap", or so she called it. It was Rap anyway. She was enjoying it so much that I couldn't help wanting to learn more about it. I know Rap is a big influence among young people and should not be easily disregarded.
I'd like to listen to it. But I have no idea where to start. Anyone could make some suggestions?. A list of Artists and songs perhaps. I don't mean R&B like Beyonce and such. I mean Rap, the tough kind.

If you are looking for gangsta rap, go with guys like Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Mack-10, Tupac Shakur, Ice Cube, Public Enemy, Wu-Tang Clan, Notorius B.I.G., Eazy E,and most importantly, Bone Thugs and Harmony. WARNING: Eminem and 50 Cent are not gangsta rap! They are mainstream and all about club beats. Snoop Dogg will have mostly club beat songs but his earlier songs were gangsta rap like Gin and Juice, It's Like This and Like That. You can't go wrong with the guys I gave ya.

Listen to Lonely by Attack Attack! if you like dubstep songs or songs that use dubstep lol :P And just listen to the radio, looking at what you like most of that would be on 96.1, 94.1, or 98.5 oh yeah! and The Medic Droid, Hollywood Undead and Indies bands :P

I like "eminem" also "50 cent" "tech n9ne" (yes, spelled this way) is really good.
those are my favorites.
My favorite by tech n9ne is called "oxycotton" the other songs by this group are ok, but I really only listen to this one track
