so you know in the UK youre not allowed to say "merry christmas" anymore because its politically incorrect.. what do people think about this? isnt it sort of ridiculous? i dont mind whatever religion some belongs to or whatever beliefs they have.. and i definitely dont think that you should opress other peoples beliefs.. but isnt that whats happening? isnt this opression of free speech? it seems ridiculous to me. the government are way too worried about offending religious groups.. besides arent some people offended by the smaller religious groups (islam for example)? personally im agnostic and i dont have a problem with anyones religion. i just think this political correctness thing is ridiculous and challenging brits' rights to free speech. so what does anyone else think? should we be allowed to say merry christmas? is there anyone whos genuinely offended by this? thanks

Mike - don't be such a fool. You can say Merry Christmas to anyone you like. Who has told you that you can't, and why were you stupid enough to believe them? And why do the rest of you fall for this nonsense?

IT'S NOT TRUE!!!

There is no ban on Christmas, Christmas cards, wishing someone a Merry Christmas.

The whole idea that there might be is a backlash on so-called political correctness put about by racist groups.

Political correctness went too far in the 1980's with some over-zealous left-wingers but they were soon ridiculed and they shut up.

However, the racists saw a propaganda opportunity and have sought to keep the idea of political correctness (especially their favourite "PC gone mad") alive as a means of dividing people who would prefer to integrate.

Think about it - who benefits from crap about Christmas being banned and half-witted stories about Baa Baa Blue Sheep? The BNP and UKIP racists do - they can make political capital with lies about your way of life being under threat. Does anyone actually personally know any Muslims, Bhuddists or Hindus offended by our Christmas celebrations?

Don't believe the Daily Mail & BNP propaganda about PC gone mad. It's designed to divide when most of us want to work together.

Yes you should be allowed to say Merry Christmas.

If I know I'm dealing with a Jewish person I will say Happy Hanukkah.

If I'm sure the African American person celebrates Kwanzaa I'll say Happy Kwanzaa.

If I know you are agnostic, I will sometimes say Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas. But no one has every been offended by me saying Merry Christmas.

I just mix it up more now. With Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas. Or have a nice Holiday Season.

But to dictate to people that they can't say Merry Christmas at all is terrible. And what about all the wonderful Christmas songs that say Christmas in them? Do you have to change the wording in them?

See where I'm coming from that governments can go overboard at times.

People don't get offended, because it's a friendly gesture. And if Muslims around the world or other religions are getting offended by it, they should study it, like a lot of us study their religious beliefs and practices to have a better understanding of each other.

But to have the minority dictate to the majority is just plan unconscionable.

You're right that when the government says they don't want people to be "offended" they are actually taking away freedom of speech.

Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah, Happy New Year!

I have not met anyone who claims to be offended by it.

I would also like to mention that in my job I meet and work with a lot of people of Muslim and Hindu faiths and many of them have made a point of wishing me a Merry Christmas.

Makes you think doesn't it? Who is really taking offence here?

A Merry Christmas to you too

Of course you can say "Merry Christmas" ! For the majority of the population it isn't a religious festival anyway. I overheard a woman say to her friend when they were looking at a very small display of the nativity - "Look they are trying to bring religion into Christmas" !

Merry Xmas !

lucky for all of us here then ,we never say merry Christmas anyway ,we all say happy Christmas .
Joking apart ,i don`t think it`s any good us putting the blame for this PC stupidity on ethnic minorities .They`re not the ones who have a problem with Christmas ,(i know ,because i asked on here, and all answers said they enjoyed Christmas and were not offended at all ) it`s down to the social do gooders who see problems that are not there .These people do more harm and cause more hatred between people than any racist could hope to achieve .in fact i have often thought they`re closet racists themselves ,they must get their ideas from somewhere and it seems to me they come out of their own narrow minds .

We should all be allowed to say Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah, or any other wish for someone else. Its all getting too ridiculous. If I am Jewish and someone wishes me a Merry Christmas, how have they harmed me?

In the US, about 90% of the population celebrate Christmas even though not that many are Christians. Yet Merry Christmas is politically incorrect. CRAZY.
Anyhow,
Merry Christmas to you and your family!

I'm a Catholic from a secular country. I have many Hindu & Muslim friends....all of us wish each other on Diwali, Eid, Christmas, regardless of our personal faiths. Its just good manners to wish someone during their festival. What's offensive is not wishing them.

How wishing someone during their festival can be construed as offensive is beyond me.So I'm pretty horrified reading about what's going on in Britain. And pretty glad reading your question to know there's at least one sane person in that country. What this world desperately needs is for people to spread goodwill and positivity, instead of suppressing basic free speech.

In that spirit, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you :)
