My mother keeps a closet full of gifts she never used and "free-gift-with-purchase" items. Every birthday and Christmas she pulls one out for me, while I have always thought for hours about a gift that might make her happy.
She is financially well-off, but I suppose this stems from the fact that she was quite poor as a child. Should I just keep smiling and saying "Thanks, mom" ?

Jon - you made me laugh, but I really don't think I'll do that.

Mothers can be like. Mine was raised in the depression so I know where you're coming from. If you have brothers and sister and she does the same to them, why don't you all suggest that you not exchange gifts any more. Tell her it detracts from the spirit of the season. Or you could say that you already have some and maybe one of her friends would get more enjoyment out of it....you'd hate to waste it. If you don't want to do that, smile and say thank you. She means well and probably see them as nice gifts. Hope this helps. Good luck.

It's not the gift that matters it's the thought.
Those that can't afford gifts, or who want to bring back the true meaning of the season, give of themselves and that is the best gift of all.

Just be grateful that you're receiving something.
A gift is a gift - It's not about who buys or gives
the better gift or where it's from. It's about gratitude.
The lack of gratitude these days is overwhelming.

to those who answer that it is the thought that counts be happy with what you are given, that's true. but if the gift makes it plain and obvious that i have to get you something so here take this piece of crap because this is what i think of you then i say buy her some random useless piece of crap and be done with it.
