A main reason that it happens is that there is no "loser pays" rule.
In most of the rest of the world, whoever loses the lawsuit pays the legal fees of BOTH parties.
In America, legal fees are rarely awarded.
Plus, attorneys can take cases on contringency fee - they take a percentgage (usually a third) of any judgment, and the client does not pay (except for costs) if he loses.
So people see it as a "no lose" proposition.
Except we ALL lose - when products cost more because the costs of excessive judgments are passed on to the consumer, when playgrounds are closed for fear that a child will fall and skin his knee, when the healthcare system is in crisis because doctors order excessive, unnecessary tests and malpractice insurance rates have skyrocketed, etc.
Sad.

Because for some it is an easy way to make a quick buck. The laws in the US also allow for some ridiculous opportunities to sue. There really are no other countries were a crook can sue a home owner for getting injured while breaking in, or were a trespasser can sue if they get hurt on your property.

unfortunately america is saturated with lawyer who desperately need to earn a living even if its for the least little thing they just need to find people willing to make a buck. Another thing the American civil law is too broad as a result of the liberal interpretation of principles given by judges which allows americans to sue for the least little thing. I mean in which other country would fat people consider suing Mcdonalds for making them grow fat?

Canada is getting just as bad. It's not just an American thing. We also have more laws to protect us against the crap that goes on.A good reason may be that here we get free medical care and it doesn't matter if you are poor or rich, the care is basically the same. Although not always.

It is embarrassing to admit that this does happen all the time in the US. I don't understand how people get away with it. Hopefully, we will wake up and accept that once in a while we are going to have bad luck and just learn to deal with it, instead of expecting compensation. Are the laws in Europe harder to bend or is this not common because it is not socially acceptable there?

It's better the lottery!
You can get a lawyer to sue for you, and you have a chance to win millions, but you don't owe anything unless and until they collect.
In the lottery you have a chance to win millions, but you still have to spend a buck in advance on a ticket!

Like anything else, litigation is abusable. Add to that the fact that you can make money at it, and you have all kinds of golddiggers in the courthouse looking for a big payday.
Moralality, and right vs. wrong are becoming secondary to the primary goal of lining one's pockets.

maybe because they can, they have that right.
You do realize that Americans do NOT have to pay income tax.
There is NO LAW that says you have to pay income tax, people have won this in court cases because NO ONE can find this law.
Don't believe me?
I dare you to find the law.
