It's a tough call, when you're trying to get young players like Lennon, Wright-Phillips and Agbonlahore embedded into the team - they'll always have the shadow of Beckham hanging over them and, if they were subbed for him in the second half of a game, it could have an effect on their confidence - an example of this was when 21 year-old Teves was subbed for 40 year-old Sherringham the other week at West Ham.
That said, England's last two performances have been so dry, uninspiring and toothless that it might be good to have some seasoned campaigners threatening the heels of these seemingly lazy kids - might do them some good to have real competition for their places!

i'm glad that beckham was dropped from the england squad. I think only an english manager would of had the balls to drop him. He has past his prime and to be honest there are far better players that are subs for england. England needs to see more of lennon he's a really talented younster and will be even better when he gets older. I'd prefer him to be on instead of beckham any day of the week! : )

Beckham should definitely be in the team. Forget a second half sub! He is a player of great value and the English coach needs to take off his blindfold and see that Becks still has a great deal to give!!!! Those who say he's passed his prime - you're obviously not thinking clearly!!!

He's done and had his day. i am a big admirer of becks but too many below par performances for england have taken its toll. Especially when there are so many midfield options for england. Aaron Lennon, SWP, even bringing in a holding midfielder like Carrick. Not too mention the truly amazing performances of Owen Hargreaves when he has that number 7 shirt. It's time for the future i think. Ashton and Rooney up front, Hargreaves, Lamps, Gerrard, J.Cole in midfield. A.Cole, JT, Rio, and G.Nev for now but eventually Glen Johnson and Robbo in goal. Those are the players but whether the manager can get them to play or not is a different matter.

Beckham is finished. He can cross and hit free kicks but not much else now. He got about 20 caps off the back of one performance against Greece and long since ceased to inspire the team as captain. Look to the future.

He should be out for England and he's not that great to be a second half sub.

Why when you have so many better options for the right side of midfield and in the centre.
e.g. Aarron Lennon, Shaun Wright Phillips, James Milner
Owen Hargreaves, Scott Parker, Joey Barton, Joe Cole
to name but a few.

He's got no pace (which makes his crossing ability pretty redundant if he can't get past defenders), Stevie g is nearly as good a crosser, if not as good, as beckham, he hardly tracks back or tackles, he hardly plays for real and he's getting old. Then there's the whole prima donna thing. Need I go on?

A fantastic weapon to have on your bench. And still more of a threat than Frank Lampard. Nobody crosses better and his free kicks are deadly. How quickly people forget his performance against Greece when, in the 2nd half, he got us to the world cup virtually single handed.

yes .i didn't see why he was excluded from national team as he is probably performing better than some players I have seen wearing english jersey .Though his speed is not as good as it was but I think his passing skills still good, can read the game well ,change it and pass message from the coach to the players successfully. His presence bring much confidence to up and coming players such as Lennon and others.
