They are bit very good.

Today the Intel Core 2 Duo is the best available but AMD has an even better chip due out soon. Intel will then better that one and so on.

Up until the release of the Core µarchitecture, the answer would have been pretty clear. Go for AMD.
However, now that Intel's Core µarchitecture has been released, things are different. A clear-cut answer is not possible anymore. Intel's Core 2 processors run cooler (something that used to be an issue with Intel, their processors ran hotter than AMD's equivalents) and have higher IPC (Instructions Per Clock) meaning that no longer is a 2.2GHz processor from AMD approximately as fast as a 3.5GHz Intel processor. This doesn't mean that clock speed alone is a good way to compare processing power, it isn't, but ti does mean that Intel's processors are more efficient than their previous Netburst based processors.
So, right now, I would probably get a nice Core 2 dual core processor. However, keep your eye on AMD. They should be releasing some new processors soon.
For further reading, I suggest reading processor reviews at places like Anandtech, HardOCP, X-bit Labs and many other hardware review sites.

I think it should be obvious that AMD is better, but I'll give you something more to work with. in benchmarking, amd's have always shown superior performance when measured against an equally dated intel version. competing amd pc have also always had efficient power consumption. intel pc performance has been limited by the Ghz, but AMD stays at a 1.4 Ghz- 2.4 Ghz range, and yet continues to increase in performance. they do this by increasing processor "step efficiency", the series of steps electricity takes to route the data from the processor, out and vice-versa. currently AMD is at Athlon 64 5600+ for their desktop processors. 5600+ refers to Mhz. it's a way of subtly showing that it has the same perfomance as an Intel would if clocked at 5.6 Ghz. since that does not exists, intel is really behind on R&D.
Intel survives off of loyalties, age old company contracts, and advertising. AMD gets its customers for their reputation. but don't take my word for it- google it for yourself.

Intel Core 2 Duo or Intel Quad 6700 is the best of the best. but not everyone can afford the best of the best!

Intel Core 2 6600 is looking at around $300 for the processor and this would be the best bang for the buck and offer exceptional performance.

Dale F knows his stuff.

AMD is still powerful, but when you compare the two processors in any benchmark test, The intel Core2duo (aka conroe) will come out ahead. AMDs dont run super hot, nor do they run faster. Also, 5600+ does not mean 5.6ghz, it is the model number.

no matter is amd or intel, try to look out for these: -

3.5 ghz and above cpu speed.
2 gb memory.
160 gb master and slave hard drives.
1 dvd rewriter drive.
1 normal dvd rom drive.
motherboard with audio output.
at least 6 usb ports.

the rest will follow.

obvious choice.
intel core 2 duo.
hands down

for the people that say AMD is better, you u f'ing retarded? check out the bench marks and you'll see. the e6300 ($200) cpu can beat an fx62($1000) chipset when overclocked.
