In most cases it is unfinished/unresolved issues from our childhoods. We are drawn to the people that we are, as a result of unmet needs that we hunger for and many are unaware that that is what is going on. If those get healed than our attraction shifts and changes with the shift of perception. I know that the kind of people I once was attracted to in the past, I wouldn't even want to spend any of my time with today. And others, that went ignored before, would be met with my being attracted. So, it is our internal make-up that does it and that is often unconscious.
