I'm not being horrible but there must be someone from New Orleans who can answer this one reliably. My view would be that you have to track the smell back to its source and deal with the item. I would suspect that it is flooring and you may be able to rip it up and claim on your insurance if you haven't already. Timber joists and so on under carpet will take forever to dry out if you don't let the air get to them. As other people have said, this is the key - you must let air circulate.

God knows! My landlord will not fix the damp in my room and says I must have put wet laundry against it, but why are my sheets and duvets damp every morning?
I think the answer would be wack the heating on high and once the room is dry keep the windows and doors open if at all possible. Unfortunately you are in for a long haul.
You have my sympathies and I hope it does not ruin your Christmas.

Most washing machines have a "freshen up" cycle, which is pretty short and will just take the damp smell away. You can also put fabric conditioner in with the wash which will make whatever you wash smell nice..

Probably what you are smelling is mold. This will always make a room smell of dampness. You will probably have to hire a contractor who is rated for that job. I don't know of any shortcuts for this.
