Is an apple macbook sufficient for me to run final cut pro 5.1 and shake for editing. I intend to buy an external hard drive to use instead of the internal hard drive, would just like to know if the new ones can run the mentioned programs smoothly without stalling and so on

It will run OK but you should really be looking at a MacBook Pro if you want to run these power hungry apps.

It would run them, but might struggle with some projects.
The MacBook only has integrated graphics and I think those video apps tend to farm some of the processing out to the GPU. You'd be much better off with a MacBook Pro and a beefy graphics card.

What are your price restrictions ? My advice is when it comes to macs buy what u can afford. The more powerful you can get the better.. You get more for your money as with all computers if u buy a desktop rather than a laptop. But if you really want a laptop i would go for a power book. When it comes to an external hard drive I would only use that for saving final things to because if u are trying to edit from it Even over fire wire it will be unbelievably slow.
