It's very pretty and the singer/actresss was beautiful and talented too.
Maybe for ease of your daughter you'd want to spell it simpler... Alia, Aliya.

I love it. And to everyone else, maybe she intended for it to be like the singer. I loved Aaliyah (1979-2001), she was a beautiful and talented singer & actress.

Another point is that Aaliyah died in 2001. It's basically 2007. By the time that child gets older, (unfortunately) not VERY many people will even remember/know that there was a singer named Aaliyah.

Anyway, I love the name. And if you and your family like it, I say go for it. It's unique, classy, and has an beautiful meaning ("most exhaulted" in Arabic).

Merry Christmas and congratulations!

I love that name. I am a fan of the late Aaliyah but aside from that, it's a beautiful name with meaning. I think it's Swahili for 'Highest, most exhalted one'.

I love names with meaning, don't listen to people that say 'ooh she'll have problems spelling it' or 'ooh, she'll have to constantly correct people'. Boring! Who wants to be called Sarah, Emma or some other dry name that you know at least 3 other girls in her class will have.

Let me just start by saying that I think the name is pretty......a bit overused but still pretty. As far as the spelling goes, the child will not have a hard time spelling the name. If you teach her she will learn. Children are alot smarter than some people give them credit for. And the comment about her spending the rest of her life spelling it for people.....there are people with common names that have to spell it out for people....for example, if you name her kristen, people will still need to know if it's Kristin with an "i" or Kristen with an "e". Ummmm, Jaime....spelled "Jamie" or "Jaime".....half the people in the world have to spell their name for others....it's not that serious.
