Its a way of keeping people quiet about their views. As a soldier I found it annoying to be used as a reason to not bring about dialog here in America. Did some of the comments by antiwar activists kinda hurt? Yeah but i realized that most were misinformed or didn care. I am here to protect freedom of speech so I think even those that I don't agree with me can say whatever they want.

It really depends on the question or statement. Words are powerful whether people choose to believe it or not. Sometimes whether we mean to or not we condone activities or ideas which are harmful. Take for example saying that terrorists are misunderstood, or that America is responsible for terrorism. This emboldens the terrorists because it lends a false air of acceptance to their actions. People believe they are making a statement against the government, but statements are easily misinterpreted based on mindset. When someone says you should not say that they are giving an opinion based on their worldview in relation to the possible implications they perceive. The simple fact is that we have free speech and people can say what they like, we should not attempt to censor ideas, but giving an opinion is also free speech even when it is counter to the position expressed.
