I'm really wanting to read some good, genuinely scary, supernatural fiction books.

I've read Supernatural by David Ambrose which i absolutely loved and it scared the hell out of me. It's not your slasher/Jason/Mike Myers type scary, it's something that gets under your skin and gives you chills that you can't sleep after you put down the book.

So, can anyone recommend some books that are scary, yet intelligent and entertaining?

Thanks

~The Old Testament is one of the scariest works of fiction you could ever hope to read, complete with patricide, fratricide, infanticide, genocide, human sacrcifice, nuclear holocost, and the bloodthirsty rampages of a bloodthirsty megalomaniac. And, for comic relief, there are tales of wanton sexual deviance and other world interlopers, to boot.

The Lovely Bones By Alice Seabold. It's a pretty good fiction book. OR The Moral Imperative By Vincert R. Ruggiero

"The Books of Blood" volumes 1-6 by Clive Barker are some of the scariest books I've ever read. Try also, "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson (and totally ignore the recent movie), "The Legend of Hell House" by Richard Matheson (or just about anything by him), and most of Stephen King's early work. Happy reading!!

Try H.P.Lovecraft. Real American Gothic. Anything from the Cthulu mythos should do it, particularly if you like the truly obsessive stuff. The Mountains of Madness is probably his best known book. Dagon is a collection of short stories. There are quite a few anthologies, so you can spend a sleepless year or so.

Pick up anything by Stephen King and you'll be in good hands.

"Stir of Echoes" by Richard Matheson is pretty disturbing.

Peter Straub's "Ghost Story" is a classic...and if it's not, it should be.

And don't miss "The Lottery and Other Stories" by Shirley Jackson.

Happy reading!

Not all Stephen King books are created equal. "The Shining" is definitely one of the scariest and one of the most supernatural too.

Sandman by E. T. A. Hoffmann. It's a classic, so you must read it. You can also read it at the link below if you prefer e-books.
