Because the person who made it that way was high on some sort of drug at the time. Probably listening to Jimi Hendrix in the back of a VW Microbus.

because that's the way it is. that little rhyme helps us to spell. I learned that when i was 5. I'm 58 now and have always been able to spell eg " receive " because of that little ditty. Same as 30 days has September, April, June etc.
I notice plenty of people on Yahoo answers cannot spell.

that rule is what they say... english was made before the 'rule'... someone noticed it and used that little thing to help teach english
