A RAT WILL DIE SOONER THAN A COCKROACH .
A COCKROACH HAS AN ELABORATE NO OF SPIRACLES ALL ALONG ITS BODY HENCE IT WILL SURVIVE BUT A RAT WHOSE PRIMARY RESPIRATORY ORGAN IS THE LUNGS WILL DIE DUE TO LACK OF ATMOSPHERIC OXYGEN

Ways they will die:

1.lack of oxygen, the brain will soon lack air and begin to deteriorate

2. water blockage of nasal cavities thereby inhibiting the entry of air

3. large volume of water entry resulting in the collapse of the functioning of the lungs and shortly the body.

4.Lack of air in the body resulting in the weakening of important organs and muscles, such as brain and hearth

5.Negative feedback system recognizing low blood oxygen tries to autonomically make the animal breathe with harder gasps resulting in the entry of water even faster and soon resulting in death due to this

6. Low oxygen to hearth results in its collapse, keeping it from pumping and thereby straining arteries and veins full of blood which will cause them to strain and sever slowly resulting in deaths

7. Low blood oxygen to organs, muslces, and systems results in them to stop function and eventually collapse(very soon).

How to SAve:

Contrary to those meantioned above,

example for

1.allow for respiration so that brain will have access to air and and not deteriorate

2.keep water from entry into nasal cavities, allowing for entry of air,

do the other 5 contrary statements

this is at least true for the rat, I am not so familiar with cockroach anatomy

Why because it is dependent on oxygen entry and oxygen inhibition, oxygen lack, and oxygen plenty. For the manner in which the animals die is resulting from lack of oxygen or oxygen inhibition of entry. Likewise you are able to save because you keep, deplug the things that inhibit entry of air such as blocked nasal passage, and allow the animal access to oxygen so that systems don't deteriorate or collapse.
