As a former Dell field tech, I would say that your best bet is to replace everything related to the screen.
That means the whole screen unit. The whole deal.
Replacing just the screen is ok, but if you stepped hard enough you may have bent other parts and made it quesitonable.
If it were my laptop, I would definately replace the whole screen unit. If new enough and not under warranty, its worth going to dell to buy the full part.
If not, go local or 3rd party and buy whatever will work.

Dell would probably be able to help you. Checking the Yellow Pages under "computer repair" would probably lead to other possibilities, as well.
Whether you can plug in a monitor or not depends on a variety of factors, such as how and to what extent the screen was damaged, the Windows configuration of your computer, and the kind of monitor you plug in. The easiest way to check would be to try it. In most cases, you'll need to press a special key combination to tell the computer to look for the external monitor; Fn+F5 or Fn+F8 often do the trick. While many laptops support connections to televisions, the external monitor hookup is generally supported better; I would recommend trying that first.
Check your laptop's manual and/or key legends for further assistance.
Good luck!

Hey there, sorry to hear about your mishap. You can plug in a monitor into your VGA out and it'll work fine.
As for fixing it, it'll probably cost a good $400...not sure if it's better to do that or just to get a new one and sell this one by parting it out.
BTW, stepping on it is usually NOT covered by warranty. =) But doesn't hurt to try...never know, might find a new person that'll do it for ya.

you should be able to use a tv or another monitor with your laptop. you will see either a) a s-video port, which is circular with many pins, that will work with a TV, or b) an analog vga port or dvi port which will output to a computer monitor.
dvi port - http://www.hometheaterpeople.com/tutorials/images/DVI.gif
vga - http://www.avtoolbox.com/images/1t-vga-catrx-rear.jpg
s- video - http://www.pasarlascanutas.com/conectar_pc_tv/s-video_a_scart_1_04.JPG
hope this helped.
