Amish people shun technology because it becomes a source of envy. For example, if the Amish had cars, a neighbor might buy a Ford Focus - and you might feel as though you needed to buy a Volkswagen Passat to have a "nicer" car than your neighbor. It becomes a source of competition and draws focus away from becoming a better person, which is what the Amish encourage. For the same reason, they do not allow makeup, hair ornamentation, "stylish" clothing, etc. This is intended to equalize everyone in the community, and if you want to "compare" yourself to your neighbor, you're comparing if you're as good a person as they are, if you've done as much to help people as they have, etc. A very admirable way to live, in my opinion!

Also with the Amish, the girls are educated until the 8th. grade. Then they are taught at home in the ways of being a wife and mother. The young men are taught farming and construction. If the Amish build anything for you then you know it is done right and will last. They are also a very honest people. They do not borrow money and their word is as good as a contract. They are also reluctant to press any charges against people who have done them wrong. As in "turn the other cheek". If the children so desire they can leave the order and try to make it in main stream society. And if that kind of life does not suit the child then they can return. This is sad but not long ago in Pennsylvania, a man went into their school and took the girls hostage and shot them. People from all over America sent monies to help with the funerals and all. The Amish community did accept it this time but as a rule they are self sufficient. They do not like their pictures taken because they believe this to be a graven image. The girls play with dolls that have no faces. To them no animal is a pet.

There's a place called Amish Country about 2 hrs from where I live, in the country. I believe they don't want to get caught up in the world as it is today. They live in simple times which i believe are better times. They don't have to worry about the latest gadgets and don't waste their money on "things" that people really don't need. Yes its nice to have electricity and cars, but think of all the money spent on these things. They work hard and it shows. They make beautiful furniture and delicous foods. In the little town by me the amish have little shops and sell what they make for a living without all the crap that we use today. And they don't refuse technology they just don't see any use for it. I mean its not like their saying everyone can't use tech.

"The Amish (IPA: ËÉËmɪÊ, Pennsylvania Dutch: ËÉËmɪÊ) are an Anabaptist Christian denomination in the United States and Ontario, Canada that are known for their plain dress and limited use of modern devices such as automobiles and electricity. The Amish separate themselves from mainstream society for religious reasons: they do not join the military, they draw no Social Security, nor do they accept any form of financial assistance from the government, and many avoid insurance. Most speak a German dialect known as Pennsylvania Dutch (or Pennsylvania German) at home and in church services, and learn English in school. The Amish are divided into separate fellowships consisting of geographical districts or congregations. Each district is fully independent and has its own Ordnung, or set of unwritten rules. This article primarily discusses the conservative Old Order Amish fellowships that observe strict regulations on dress, behavior, and the use of technology. There are many New Order Amish and Beachy Amish groups that use electricity and automobiles, but still consider themselves Amish."

Other people have told you who they are. But please know that they are not wrong or nuts. They generally refuse to use technology because that would make them dependent on what they call "The English World". They do sometimes use electric generators, rather than the electric company, which would make them dependent on the English World again. But they generally shun televisions, radios and computers because of the many bad influences modern life would expose them to.
Again, they are not wrong and they are not nuts. I have children and I wish sometimes that we had a simpler way of life, like the Amish people. They do not have house or fire insurance because they are assured that if their house or barn burns down the community will come together to build them another. They do not generally embrace modern technology because they are happy with their simple life. They are also not stupid and they are aware that it is a choice. Therefore, they allow their children to go out into the "English World" once they are young adults, in order to have a taste of what it is like and decide which life is for them. Please note: The majority choose to return to their traditional way. They are wonderful, loving and forgiving people, something that was tragically demonstrated with the horrible shooting in their comunity a few weeks ago.

Amish people are there somewhere in US. I read about them in The Hindu. They refuse to use technology but are becoming more and more a part of the mainstream.

They are a real hard core religious movement. The men dont shave the women wear head scarfs and they travel by horse and cart. Very similar to the olden day jews.
No radios or television but the ring leaders have access to everything and they preach to their members that it is all evil!!
Go figure???
Hope that helps you.
