I suggest an economical banjo and a book by Mel Bay. Mel Bay books are the bibles for stringed instruments and teach you the fingerings with tabliture markings as well as good photographs to show you exactly. More than what you "buy" to acquire this skill, be prepared to play it at least 30-60 min. a day, every day, all the time if you plan to get fast enough to change chords without pausing...then it's picking time.

It extremely basically relies upon on what you want to play - a 5 string banjo is mostly finger-picked, a tenor frequently performed with a plectrum. that is often used as a mandolin will be and is in many circumstances tuned the same way too (GDAE).
