this wont help you this time but its good to know for next time. virgin do a "value advance ticket" you need to book 2-3 weeks in advance for weekend travel and 6 weeks in advance for weekday travel and you cant change your ticket, you have to travel on the day and time you book but its saves more than 2/3 of the fare. i go east croyden-victoria-euston-birmingham new street-cannock 5 day return for £10.60!! if i bought the ticket on the day i would pay £6.30 to get to euston £35 to get to birm new street and £3.60 to get to cannock, total £44.90. then pay the £3.90 and £6.30 on the way back too, full total £54.80. so while i know this doesn't help now it might be helpful in the future. you will need to ask for the value advance ticket specifically as the operatror on the phones dont like to tell you and virgins call centres are in india so DONT use a credit card, use a debit card with not much money ever in the account but other than that it is a great service. there a very few value advance seats on each train so call early and find out exactly when they are releasing the tickets for the day you are travelling, and it will cost the same if you go from euston to new street as it will if you go from a station around london to victoria to euston then a station around new street once you get there. eg if i went euston to new st it would still cost £10.60 and i would have to buy the other tickets as well so make sure you get your full journey on the ticket when you book. hope this helps next time, sorry theres nothing you can do this time :)

Your best bet is to travel late tonight, Friday travel is more expensive and you'll have a terrible time trying to find a seat. I will be leaving Euston at around 9pm, an even cheaper option is to travel from Marylebon to Snow Hill station, but be warned, the journey time can be a lot longer.
