My 14 yr. old has been on St John's wort for 2 weeks but his morning mood is still very flat. Has anyone any experience of taking it before bedtime?

I know about St John's Wort but I believe it is a remedy for the symptoms and not the cause of the problem.

Try this natural remedy that boosts and strengthens the nervous system in a natural way, because it has lots of vitamins not found anywhere else. You will be amazed. Guaranteed. Start giving your son small amounts of "bee pollen" . Bee pollen is excellent for the NERVOUS SYSTEM, it is natural and inexpensive and available everywhere. You can Google it to be sure.
All my kids take regularly bee pollen and we NEVER have to go to see the doctor.

Sheila,
I'm glad that you asked this question. St. John's Wort has been found to be ineffective for treating depression and is not very likely to help your son's brain 'get going', either in the morning or the evening. The mood boost that some people report from taking it is probably just a case of the placebo effect.

St John's Wort never did anything for me.

It's not regulated in the U.S., so there's no guarantee that what you buy over the counter even contains the right herbs.

If you live in the U.S., you're better off taking the kid to a therapist and getting controlled prescription meds for depression. Despite what the hysterical ones say, the meds are not that bad. If there's any problem, it's that it can sometimes take a while to find the right ones.

But herbs? In the U.S.? Forget it. The stuff is all junk.

Different herbs or medicines act on different levels. For example Nux vomica (poison nut), strychinum( alkaloid of nux vomica) , gelsemium ( yellow jasmine.), coffea cruda ( coffee) , chamomilla(german chamomile) , hypericum ( st, johns wort) all work on central nervous system level. They act on involuntary system of the human being.

some medicines work on physical level, some on mental level.

As you mentioned about the st johns wort herb ,
It is sedative and an astringent.
Excitability, Neuralgia, fibrosities, sciatica. Topically wonds.

specific indication is menopausal neurosis which is not applicable here.

The main contra indication of this herb is DEPRESSIVE STATES.
The toxicity found with this herb in sheep and the cattle is photosensitisation.

I am not sure for what purpose you are using this herb to your son. If you find this is of no use then please discontinue and please administrate a single dose of hypericum 1M to remove the side effects of the herb followed by sulpher200c a single dose.

All herbs or medicines like above which effect on involuntary and neurotic system are supposed to be taken at bed time because it works well during night with involuntary system.

i don't think your sun needs st johns wort. instead please give him alfalfa mother tincture .

Dont take St Johns wort if already taking anti-depressents as they can react with each other.

Taking St John's can be done anytime of day really. It depends on which the patient finds most beneficial. By all means try taking it in the evening and see how it goes.
2 weeks isn't really long enough to see any significant results though. SJW has an accumulative effect on Seretonin levels and so takes a while to work.

I have heard that it can help with sleep disorders taken in the evening. But please be aware that it will take longer than 2 weeks to help, especially if it is a lower dose tablet/capsule.Even commercial anti-depressants can take up to six weeks to kick in. Taken in tincture form it can work quicker, but if you want something that works quickly, check out various flower remedies. The Australian Bush Flower remedies can work very fast to lift a low mood, try Waratah for severe depression. Plus, mornings are never good times for teenagers; the brain is going through a great deal of change and development, making them tired and grouchy.

It does't always work. Try it for a couple of months then see what happens.
