I have worked for others before, and now I am a boss of my own.

I don't kiss-up to my boss as I do not need that. My boss does not need that too since our performances tells him whether we are doing a good job or not.

When I started my own company, I informed my boss about it, and he gave me all his blessings - in fact also helped me in certain areas where I was then weak in (such as getting some overseas contact for me as well as recommending me to a bank whcih helped me to finance my business). Till today, my boss and I maintained a very good friendship although we are staying thousands of miles away.

I have a total of 32 staffs with me in 3 companies located in 2 countries. None tries to favour me. Anyone who does that may be backfired. I am not joking.

Well, let me just put in a simple way. BS is abound around us. We say things that we don't mean all the time, to family, friends, salesmen, neighbours, etc. If you are so forthcoming with your boss, they obviously won't like it and eventually you will get yourself fired. On the other hand, too much unjustified kissing up also draws a circle around your perceived personality, and your boss may think of you as trying to cover up for your incompetency. So, just play it by the ear. Use your brains and be social, but not so much a kisser-up.
