Everybody is a hero/heroin of his/her own life.They want their life to be as great as possible. They want to be more and more superior than other. Being popular means you are somehow better (may be not) than other. That's why people want to be popular. It is called 'ego'.

Probably because they want to feel loved and admired, know that they have a lot of friends etc. Although popularity doesn't necessarily mean those things... I suppose it's how some people view it?

Try being unpopular, with no friends and no attention. You start to crave the approval of others, if even just once. Really, being popular is like the exact opposite of being lonely. Good and constant company is something that we all want, even if some of us don't realize it.
