Sadness/pain is more powerful for more- that's the emotion that calls me to action. Happiness/elation just makes me lazy and content.

Psychologists keep saying that we feel a loss much more strongly than a gain, so I would say sadness/pain is more powerful. If you buy a stock that goes down 50%, that affects you more emotionally than the stock that goes up 100%. There's lots of psychological research to support this.

Sadness/pain.
But not necessarily because it's more powerful, I think it just has more of an affect over the body. It's more of an overwhelming feeling the happiness.

It depends on how you see it. If you're a person that's known nothing but happiness, then sadness must feel new to you. More effective. Also the same if it's in reverse.
