Charles Wresford Brown wasan Englishman and when asked by a friend 'Do you want to play Rugger' which is an abbreviation of Rugby he replied 'No, i would rather play Soccer'. Soccer is a shortened form of ASOCCiation Football, which it was commonly known as at that time.
however, it was rarely called this and people just called the game football until the Americans arrived with their own game 'American Football' which i believe uses the hands a lot more than the feet. however, because the Americans called their national sport football we had to be the ones who changed the name of our national game in order to suit the Americans and not confuse them (because it is so very easy to confuse Americans). so the media and then the public started calling the ame soccer and, unfortunately, it appears to have stuck, despite many staunch British people continuing to call our game football.

Hope this helps and i also hope you are not American in case i get reported! Please dont, i have nothing against Americans, its just that the whole football thing gets right up my back!

Football (also known as association football or soccer) is a team sport played between two teams of 11 players each. It is widely considered to be the most popular sport in the world. A ball game, it is played on a rectangular grass field, or occasionally on artificial turf, with a goal at each end of the field. The object of the game is to score by maneuvering the ball into the opposing goal; only the goalkeepers may use their hands or arms to propel the ball in general play only in their box (if outside the box, they are normal field players). The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is tied at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extended time, depending on the format of the competition.

The modern game was codified in England following the formation of the Football Association, whose 1863 Laws of the Game created the foundations for the way the sport is played today. Football is governed internationally by Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). The most prestigious international football competition is the World Cup, held every four years. This event, the most widely viewed and famous in the world, boasts twice the audience of the Summer Olympics.

It is a slang shortening of "Association Football", which is what the sport is properly called.

The word "soccer" was first used in English private schools around 1875, in order to differentiate the sport fom Rugby Football, which itself was was termed "rugger".
