I don't know about all states, but in Texas many coaches have a teaching field of history/social studies. That means that for a person who wants to teach and NOT coach you are competing against coaches for positions. Unfortunately in Texas at many schools athletics is given top priority. I am not saying it is impossible to find a job at a good school, I am just saying that it may not be as easy as you might think. I teach at a middle school and in our school only 2 of our social studies teachers are NOT coaches.

Generally I thought that Social Studies was taught in elementary school and middle school. In high school you would generally be teaching US History, World History, Geography or sometimes a class on World Cultures. If you are looking for a good high school you could look for lists of the best high schools in the area where you live. Sometimes there are guides written on the best high schools in newspapers (go to the library). You will have competition for jobs in the best high schools and often they don't have the high turnover of city schools and thus they may not have many openings. Good Luck.
