Donjoy Playmaker. Very versitile, practical, and expensive brace. It is the only brace I use for my athletes when I return them to play following ACL reconstruction. If you have been cleared by your orthopaedic to play again, you do not need a brace that will lock you out at a certain angle. You should be back to, or real close to your pre-injury range of motion.

You should consider a few factors. What sport and what level will you be returning to? Do you have any other injuries or conditions to your knee such as osteo arthritis? What stage of recovery are you in? What is your prognosis (expected improvement)? Generally speaking, if you've had ACL reconstruction, the last thing that you want is for your knee to hyper-extend, which is fatal to the ACL. An appropriate brace would "lock" at a preset angle to prevent unwanted extension (straightening of the knee). A rigid frame brace is a must. I most often work with Donjoy. The "Defiance III" model is top of the line, with a top of the line price tag (about $1400) but they are custom made and actually adjustable based on your recovery stage. BREG is also a decent brand. Your neighborhood rehabilitation clinic should have some one qualified to fit these braces.

Why should you be the one to look for a brace? The doctor who did the recon job should prescribe the needed brace for you. Not all knee braces are the same so there might be specs which need to be met. Ask your orthopedist.
