First, what gift shops and other somewhat original places of business are worth visiting? Second, what are the names and locations of the area's regular shopping malls?

I think the only malls are Del Monte in Monterey, right off of highway 1, and a big mall in Salinas off of 101, called Northridge I believe. Northridge is a typical mall, one story except Macys and JC Penny, nothing really special except that it is the closest mall for people in Salinas and Hollister. Del Monte is an outdoor mall with a few more interesting stores as well as standard mall stores.

The best shopping is in downtown Carmel. There are lots of little boutiques, but they are generally expensive. If you want antiques (of the knick-knack type) then there is a big red barn between Monterey and Gilroy on 101, with a lot of antique stores inside.

Edit: Yes, the poster under me is right, there is a shopping area near the aquarium called Cannery Row. I have never been because that whole area is very touristy and crowded, and it is hard to park and get around.
