Actresses of that era were protected to some extent from their own excesses, compared to Britney, Paris, Nicole and the rest of the magazine fodder of today.
I am not sure if we would regard them as beautiful and graceful with the press sticking their cameras up their dresses. The public never knew the full story - Bergman having an affair with Roberto Rossolini (and Isabelle born out of wedlock), Rock Hudson gay, Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy living in sin.
They were elegant and graceful, but so are some of todays actresses - Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, even Bergman's daughter.

Is this a fact or are you asking us to make up your mind for you? Yes, celebrity has changed over the course of history and while most actresses are not as sophisticated as those of hollywood past, a few still manage to dazzle. Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman... Paris Hilton (totaly kidding about Miss "No-talent" Hilton) I personally adore Sophia Loren. Talk about a knockout...

I would certainly have her in the top 5, easily. My #1 of all time would be Grace Kelly. I would also have Natalie Portman there, in that group. Another possibility for #1 is Rania Al-Abdullah Queen of Jordan...WOW. Just go look at some photos of her.

Each generation has its own definition of 'beauty'! Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder as it is a subjective quality. You would always find people who agree with you and others who differ in this regard. Others' opinion shouldn't matter as long as you get to enjoy beauty the way you perceive it! So go ahead.

I agree, she was one of the prettiest.....and there were many beautiful actresses back then. Today's actors and actresses can't "hold a candle" to any of Hollywood's legends. They could even act back then too.....

She definitely dominated the screen whenever she was present. Intermezzo, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Notorious - all movies in which the screen lit up in her presence.

You nailed it.(Rosellini be damned.) Class is something you cannot advertise.Unlike the primitive amateur pole-dancers that are foistered upon us by the media today.
