There are heaps of antivirus programs out there but if you want one than scans and gets rid of any virus or infection then go to www.avast.com and download Avast 4 home edition. Its free, skinnable (some of the skins are really cool) and has auto-update. It is also fully configurable and compatiable with the windows XP firewall. The only thing: just watch when you receive your free registration key - make sure you copy it down letter for letter and number for number otherwise it won't let you run it. If you can cut and paste the key from your email then I recommend doing that.
It sounds an alarm when an infection is found and speaks to you when it finds a virus. It is very thorough during its scanning sessions so it may seem quite slow. Ad-aware works well with it also. You can also check Avast out on www.download.com.

Good security requires a multi-layered approach, and the least important layer by far is running some kind of anti-malware program (in fact, if you take care of all the other layers, you don't even need an anti-malware program using up extra resources). In order of importance: 1. Create and use almost exclusively a limited user account instead of the default administrator account Windows sets you up with 2. Read up on social engineering and how to avoid it 3. Don't download illegal copies of software, music, or movies 4. Set Windows updates to install automatically 5. Make regular backups. If possible, back up your entire installation (using Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image)

Where did you get this info that AVG will not be free next month?
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5 I see it always free.
Anyway, another good quality anti-virus and probably better than AVG is Avira. It has shown excellent record in many professional tests.
http://www.free-av.com/
People also like Avast but I had reports of system problems with Avast. So, I will not recommend that. But it might vary in users. Still you can check it out.
Don't be fool by Pro and Free versions. In anti-virus this does not matter at all as long as you get free update files. Only difference is anti-spyware protection which you don't need from them. You can always get free and far better anti-spywares like spybot and adaware se personal.
So, its perfectly alright to use free versions of antivirus like AVG and AVira
Hope it helps.

avast! 4 home is BY FAR the best free... even better than AVG Free. it is just amazingly awesomly greatly good. haha its a nice interface.. it downloads updates every week.. sometimes twice a week! And its free. trust me its great. its not nearly as popular so i doubt that many people will recommend it.. but its good.. its good.
Here is the link:
http://avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
believe me... its the best free one out there. it takes up 57 mb and doesnt seem to be slowing down my start up time or my overall processes.. its just amazing... and it speaks to you.. it says "Virus definitions have been updated" im not sure what else it says though but its really nice feature.
i hope this helps

I think they're still offering a free one aren't they? That's what I heard, but I haven't read it all yet - i'll let ya know.
Here you go............
"GRISOFT is announcing a new version of the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. This new 7.5 version with improved performance and full compatibility with the latest Windows Vista version is available. Users that are using AVG Free 7.1 will be provided with a specific dialog, within the next few weeks, with the opportunity to choose the right option fulfilling their needs. AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 15th of Jan 2007."
So just download 7.5 in January.

This is a misconception. Grisoft is ending its support for AVG 7.1 in January, but you can upgrade to AVG 7.5 and use it for free. Download AVG 7.5 from http://free.grisoft.com/

I like AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.
In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82
AOL AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb)
And it updates 15 to 20 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.
Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:
