You could build yourself a fan base by joining up to http://www.myspace.com/ and http://www.bebo.com/. Both are free to join and you will be able to put songs from your demo up for people to hear and comment on!

You need to get yourself known around your city by performing in local clubs especially when you know a celebrity is in town. I also agree with the first person.
